Pedagogy of Ahimsa 2024
A collaboration of the International Gandhian Institute for Nonviolence and Peace Canada (IGINP Canada), the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation for World Peace, and the Alberta Teachers’ Association
Ahimsa, a term usually translated into English as nonviolence, more accurately means to not do harm in thought, word, or deed; it is based in the belief that all living beings are connected and that one should always make decisions based on the deepest love for all
beings and the planet itself. Pedagogy of Ahimsa is a professional development and leadership opportunity for educators, including K12 teachers, adult educators, instructors in post-secondary institutions, and educators who work in nonformal, community, and public settings. The objective is to support educators seeking to address social justice, environmental issues, and behaviour concerns to do so through engagement with Ahimsa. |
The Pedagogy of Ahimsa workshop will provide participants an introduction to key Gandhian concepts, opportunities to hear from peace educators working in a variety of settings, and reflect individually and collectively on the ideas they are encountering. The last session in the workshop will focus on developing project ideas for each of the participants.
Participants may choose to develop these ideas into proposals to submit to the follow-up mentorship program. |
The mentorship program will provide project funding of $500 each for up to four projects that support the participants in taking their learning into practice.
Participants will be supported by mentors in monthly one-on-one sessions to develop and implement a project to promote nonviolence and peace in the classroom. These projects will be featured in the Speaking Our Peace podcast in order to share the participants’ experiences and learnings for a broader audience. |
