Day 28 ~ February 27 ~ Listening
Quotes
“What if we were to willingly listen to one another with the awareness that we each see the world in unique ways?” ~ Margaret Wheatley “An enemy is one whose story we have not heard.” ~ Gene Knudsen Hoffman "If you make listening and observation your occupation, you will gain much more than you can by talk." ~ Robert Baden-Powell |
Quote
"Most of the successful people I've known are the ones who do more listening than talking." ~ Bernard Baruch |
Reflection
How can you give the gift of listening to those around you? You can stop what you are doing and take time to listen to the feelings behind someone's words to you. Then before you speak, pause to listen to what you are about to say, and to how you are going to say it. Pause too to make sure that you have listened to, and heard, what the other person has just said to you. How does it feel to listen without interrupting, without giving advice, and without changing the story to fit your own life? |
Affirmation
What would become possible if we each approached every conversation as an opportunity to learn? Today I listen to others by listening for what I can learn from them. |
Daily Action
Be fully present to each conversation you engage in, and listen longer than usual – and with more patience – to what others are saying. Give the other person your full attention. Look directly at the person who is speaking, without thinking about other things. |
Action for Teens
Try being very present in your conversations today. Listen with your heart. Give the other person your full attention as if nothing else matters than what the other person is saying. Look directly at the person and don’t think of other things. Action for Children Today practice listening with your whole body…eyes are on the speaker, mouth is closed and quiet, ears are listening, hands and feet are still. |
Quotes
“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” ~ Bryant H. McGill “Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd have preferred to talk.” ~ Doug Larson "Listening is how we touch at a distance." ~ Susan Stewart |
