Day 26 ~ February 25 ~ Respect
Quotes
“To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” ~ Nelson Mandela “Treat every person with kindness and respect, even those who are rude to you. Remember that you show compassion to others not because of who they are but because of who you are.” ~ Andrew T. Somers |
Reflection
Let our language and actions be based on respect for others. The life of peace excludes no one. If we wish to create a culture of peace, we need to accept others for who they are. Each one of us needs to break down the self-made walls we have erected to separate ourselves from those we label as “outsiders” or “different”. |
Affirmation
Today I understand that holding others in esteem as human beings is separate and distinct from liking or approving of their actions. I recognize the basic human dignity of each person, even when their ideas or values are different than my own. |
Daily Action
As you interact with and observe people during the day, be aware of ways in which you can show respect to each person. Value their perspectives and be considerate. Listen to what others have to say with respect. The act of listening has a calming effect on others, even if they are in a heated tirade, just listening models a nonviolent response. |
Action for Teens
We all deserve respect. Think of how it feels to be disrespected. We are all very different people, but really we are all the same. We are all human. Respect the diversity of others. Action for Children Speak only with kindness today (and everyday). Use no “name calling” or “put-downs”. |
Quotes
“Courtesy towards opponents and eagerness to understand their view-point is the ABC of nonviolence.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi “To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is maybe even greater.” ~ Bono |
