Dear Grandchildren, We are about to begin the “Season of Non-Violence”. This period of time acknowledges the 64 days between the deaths of Mahatma Gandhi (January 30) and Martin Luther King (April 4), two of the world’s most prominent leaders and believers in peace and social justice through non-violent means. Right now it appears that their message is not being heard by some powerful world leaders, but I want you to know that I have hope that peace will prevail. I believe this because your parents have made the choice to bring you into this world. Like them I see the potential for peace through you. You see the world with eyes filled with wonder and acceptance. The world is a wondrous place with so many opportunities to grow and learn. You innately understand that we are all connected and the idea of reciprocity - of giving for the mutual benefit of all - makes sense. Seeing you interact with our world reminds me that living in the moment and experiencing each moment to its fullest is how we all can make the world a better place. I will do my best to help guide you towards a path of peace by making choices that reflect my belief in non-violence, social justice and peace. I will introduce you to the wonders of nature and teach you that it is our responsibility to care for nature and all of her gifts. I will encourage you to meet all kinds of people and embrace diversity. I will support you in following your dreams and being your authentic self. I will not keep you in a bubble, but help you to become aware that the world does not treat everyone equally. I will teach you about shared responsibility for our world. Know that you are not alone. This world is full of potential and you are an important part of that potential! Love, Grandma Simone (Simone Shirvell, Edmonton, Alberta)
