Dear Reva:
So pleased to hear about this special week that needs to be every week to promote kindness and non-violence. I am 84 years old or young and living mostly pain free and aware of what day of the week it is. Consider myself fortunate to have these years. A year ago this month I fell in my apartment – caught in an argument with a scatter rug and I lost. I broke my hip and had a hip replacement at that time. I now walk slowly and cautiously with the snow and ice. The most amazing part of all of this has been and is the assistance from strangers – every time I’m out. I am finding people – Indigenous, non-indigenous, young, middle aged and seniors smiling and reaching out to put my groceries in the car or help with my walker. I often need help to get a grocery cart at the food store and when I ask someone to slide a cart over to me so I’m not struggling with a cart and a walker, there is always a smile and often “anything else I can help you with?” Every time I’m out – groceries, library, doctors visit – I come home enlightened with the kindness for this senior. I am now more aware of others needing a door held or a smile and “here, let me help you,” so I am kinder and more thoughtful because of the kindness of others. I thought I would be an invisible senior – instead I have a heart of gratitude for being seen and treated like I matter. Thanks – lets hear it for non-violence. Yours in kindness, LOIS LOYER Wetaskiwin, Alberta
