Job Description for Research Assistant
The Gandhi Foundation is inviting applications from a graduate student to serve in the position of a research assistant for a research project, “Supporting Peace Education in the Province” (CLICK HERE to see attached proposal).
Purpose of the Project:
The purpose of the project is to conduct a multi-methods research project to learn more about how teachers and students at both the elementary and secondary levels in Alberta schools approach issues of peace and social justice, and what curricular and pedagogic approaches are currently in practice; and as well what extracurricular activities are active in schools, such as student clubs dedicated to social justice and peace projects. The results of the research project will help inform the work of the Foundation in developing and supporting peace and social justice education in schools and classrooms.
Responsibilities of a Research Assistant:
Working with the Education Committee of the Gandhi Foundation, the duties of a research may include the following: assistance in designing research methods and approaches (for example, questionnaires, focus group, and individual interviewing); relevant literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data and research results, writing reports, designing presentations and materials for distribution.
Preferred Qualifications:
We are interested in hiring a current graduate student (preferably at the Ph.D. level, but qualified Master’s level students will also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is in curriculum studies or policy studies, and as well to those who have a particular interest in peace and social justice education. Candidates for the position must have a knowledge of research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, with abilities to analyze, interpret and communicate research results.

Applicants are invited to submit a letter outlining their interest in the position and their knowledge and experiences in the areas of peace education, peace studies and social justice education. A concise CV should also be included with reference to experiences with and knowledge of research methods. Three references from recent or current supervisors are also required.

Conditions and Remuneration:
- The researcher will be under the supervision of and report to the Education Committee of the Foundation.
- The research position for this project would be for an initial six-month contract. At the end of that initial contract, a further extension is negotiable
- Remuneration: $40 per hour on a personal services contract at a maximum of 12 hours/week.
- Additional expenses will also be covered, including time for travel, computer and printing costs and other costs to be determined.
