About the Organization

The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace was founded in 1988 in Edmonton, Alberta. The founding of this organization was inspired by the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, and by the desire to promote greater intercultural understandings between multiple communities in Edmonton. We strive to memorialize Gandhi by sharing his teachings of nonviolence and peace.

The foundation has grown over the years to support a summer program of graduate level courses for teachers at the University of Alberta. We also host an annual conference for youth on peace and social justice, and support an annual event marking the International Day of Peace and Nonviolence every year on September 21st. We envision a society that lives in justice and peace inspired by the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. We promote peace and encourage nonviolent action based on Gandhian principles through education, public awareness, collaboration, and building intercultural understanding.
