                      Day 56 ~  March 26 ~ Self-Sufficiency

Quotes
“The great men of all areas of humanity’s activities never tried to be a better version of someone else. They simply brought to the table a full life
’s cultivation of their particular skill sets, experiences, and passions, and we must do the same.” ~ Chris Matakas

“Food became for me a way of becoming self-sufficient with my hands, to regain manual literacy, which I think has been lost on our generation and certainly younger generations. Very few people can actually make things with their hands and do things with their hands.”
~ Timothy Ferriss

Reflection
‘Self-sufficiency’ is the quality of feeling secure and content with oneself, a deep-rooted sense of inner completeness and stability. People with strong ‘self-sufficiency’ aren’t too concerned with other people’s opinions of them. Slights don’t affect them so much, because they have a deep-rooted sense of their own worth. Conversely, praise and blame don’t affect them too much either, so that they never become too carried away with their own good fortune or self-importance. (Steve Taylor)

Affirmation
“We are so accustomed to the comforts of
“I cannot
”, “I do not want to” and “it is too difficult” that we forget to realize when we stop doing things for ourselves and expect others to dance around us, we are not achieving greatness. We have made ourselves weak.” (Pandora Poikilos)  Self-sufficiency is a prerequisite for freedom, both freedom from and freedom to. And today I wonder if it may not also be a prerequisite for peace.
Daily Action
For Gandhi, economic and personal self-sufficiency - symbolized by the spinning wheel - was a vital element of independence from colonial rule and from oppressive economic conditions. People need the dignity of work and the opportunity to provide for themselves.
Discover the satisfaction of making something for yourself instead of buying it.

Action for Teens
Think about what you want to do for a living. What do you want your life to look like? What do you want to have?  How do you want to feel? What do you hope to contribute? What steps do you need to take to reach your goals? How can you become more self-sufficient?
Action for Children
Do your chores and homework without being reminded.
Quotes
“Freedom is the greatest fruit of self-sufficiency.” ~ Epicurus

“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” ~ Maimonides
